Description:

Deciduous, branched shrub 2-3 m high. The root is very branched, attaches to the soil and protects it from erosion. The bark of the twigs is dirty gray to blackish gray, depending on the age of the bush, which is furrowed in a longitudinal mesh. The leaves are composed of three leaflets on a 4 cm long stalk, the middle leaflet is slightly longer than the other two leaflets. The flowers are about 2 cm long and are collected in ovoid and oblong, erect, apical racemes up to 8 cm long (about 10 flowers in one raceme). Flowers from April to June. The fruit is a pod, 4-5 cm long and up to 1 cm wide.

Flowering season:

In May and June.

Habitat:

It grows on a calcareous substrate, especially on soils formed on shale and flysch, forming thick thickets.

General distribution:

It is an Illyrian-Balkan endemic species.

Threat status:

The species is on the Red List of Flora of FBiH (Đug et al., 2013) under the category NT - almost endangered species. Also, it is on the Red List of the flora of the RS (Anonymus, 2012). The species is on the IUCN list under the category of LC - Least Concern (Rivers, 2017).

Attractions:

It is of great importance for afforestation, and it is highly valued as a honey-bearing species.
